Democratic thinking and self-determination are both a good idea. Just not in the same “domain” of our lives.
Most of us have a positive association with the word democracy. I looked it up in the dictionary. It means a political system that grants people the power over the state through free elections.
Democratic principles govern our common coexistence if we abide by them.
However, there is a misunderstanding, into which trap I have fallen far too often. My personal life, also became a democratic process. Which meant that many people had to first agree or consent to things. Before I tried or decided to do in my life.
In fact, it got so bad that I could hardly stand it when someone objected to what I had decided for myself. I became more concerned with the opinions of others than my own.
What helps to reach self-determination
Let me share with you what I had to learn. I can make personal decisions for my life without anyone even having included in the process. My idea has always been that this is terribly selfish. And you just step on someone’s foot very quickly by doing that.
You know when I really step on someone’s foot? When I hold them responsible for my own circumstances. That’s when I even step on them hard again. The moment I let others decide about my life, means, I also made them responsible, for instance.
So there are two sides to this. And I had to admit that I was not only a victim of circumstances. But also a creator of the involuntary circumstances of others.
Find Safety Inside
Making choices for yourself can feel pretty bold. Because sometimes you don’t know if it was the right decision. Or what will happen next, or even because there is no certainty from the outside.
You have won when you can find the security within yourself. That is true self-determination.
And by the way, democracy as a community works wonderfully with people who are personally responsible, self-determined and above all happy.
